HELLO
I have read a book on how to figure out where you when reading a K. I just can't seem to get!!!!! for example, I am reading a book and the numbers are 86-93
and the next page is 93-99. Does that mean there are 6 pages, I know the dots tell where you are in the book but for some time and read numerous pages, only one dot is shown.
thanks in advance for your help
also good artice in usatoday
also, there are  a few books that are free, after reading a part of them, I know why they were free ;D

Locations are actually driven by the bytes in the digital file.

you don't need to no the arcana, you just need to know that location 100 is the same spot regardless of the font size.

That's why they need to use locations, because the font size is variable.  if you try to relate page 100 on one kindle to page 100 of the same book on another Kindle you'll be chasing your tail, unless they happen to both be using the same font size.

location 100, on the other hand, will be the same spot on both Kindles...

There are no page numbers.  86-93 means that locations 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91, 92, and 93 are being displayed.  A location is a chunk of text.  No one know how many bytes exactly.  It doesn't really matter.  It is just that anyone on any Kindle in the same book, at any font size can go to location 86, and they will all be at the same place.

When I start a book, I click on "Go to Location" on my K1.  It tells me how many locations there are in the books.  Somehow, knowing that makes me feel better.  It's best to adjust to looking at the dots to figure out approximately where you are.

That's not necessary on the K2, the last location is displayed at the right end of the progress bar, and the percentage read is displayed.
