Lost short stories

Yesterday I came across some short stories that I had written years ago. I had sent them to various magazines, but none were accepted and I got the normal rejection slips. I even got one rejection that made an impact on me since it said that they thought the story was stupid.

I am thinking of dusting these old stories off and rewriting them. The ideas are good and these short stories could be made into another short story collection.

My short story collection The Reincarnation of Julie and Other Short Stories has been my best seller so far. So perhaps it would worthwhile to make another short story collection.

Do you have any of your older short stories lying around that you could pull up and make into a short story collection?

Yes, I do have one story. It is a fantasy story called "A smile of fortune". I have written it and published in Poland in 1998, it is 22 pages long. Actually it its now in translation to English and I am planning to publish it on Kindle this month.

Yes, and yes. Both of my collections are made up from stories I wrote a few years ago (5-6).

One thing I noticed was how poor some of the slightly earlier stuff was. Needless to say, they didn't make it into the final books. And to think, I sent these out, expecting someone to publish them ::)

I have a ton of short stories, most will probably not see the light of day. The short story form is the perfect outlet to hone one's craft so I am constantly writing them. I'm currently working on another batch of werewolf themed short stories as Animal Behavior and Other Tales of Lycanthropy has been my best seller, and most praised.

Yes, a few of them, along with some novels. Some will never see the light of day, however, because I don't think the ideas are developed well enough.

Actually, this is how I got into The Mammoth Book. I already had a short story written and gathering dust, so when the opportunity came up I just dusted it off, rewrote parts, added to the length, and it was ready to go.

My Lost short story:

Lost: The Beginning

The warm breeze blew along the beach as the survivors huddled around the fire built from driftwood and seat cushions. They had been stranded on the island less than a day, but couples were already forming. Jack eyed Kate in the dim light. Charlie traded glances with the pregnant Clair. Michael said, "Where's my boy? I gotta find my boy!" Boone ogled his sister Shannon. Kate flirted with Sawyer. Sun and Jin only had eyes for each other. Sayid said, "There's not enough women here, I think I'll have a flashback to Nadia." Locke was making out with the smoke monster. Hugo eyed Vincent the Dog with a hungry look and licked his lips. Nikki and Paulo were annoying everyone, even themselves.

Author's note: Hope you've enjoyed this short story. Come back for the next installment (Lost: Crazy Sh*t Starts Happening) when Jack and Kate discover a secret hatch, break in, and find Mr. Rourke and Tattoo having a private Wesson party.
