Hopefully it has run its course for some.  Anyone who quick published a book because they "heard" it was a hot, new way to make it big should be running out the door by now.  Those of us who understand it is a business and takes time to build will stick around.

It's a business. Like any business, it changes over time and if you stay mired in concrete, refusing to change or unable to develop a new strategy you won't find success.

As others have said, write good books. Have awesome covers. Post good descriptions. Spend a little time marketing, but those 3 have to be done over and over.  And over.  Oh, and over.
Most of us won't make it. That's true of any business opportunity.
