I don't know. Maybe it's just me, but it kind of bothers me when writers get preachy or they overexplain the clear message I should've picked up on my own from reading their life story. Plus, it's hard enough to write the truth about your life and your family. Why make them wrap it up for me further. If it occurs naturally; if the writer genuinely has some moment of redemption or enlightenment, then great. Definitely share that. I'm all for that. But I don't think it should be a requirement for the genre.
