As a new member to these boards, I wanted to wish everyone a happy Memorial Day and take this opportunity to say a few words on behalf of my great grandfather, a writer of great merit, who perished long before his time due to a single life-altering moment on the battlefields of Europe.

Sergeant Anthony Raymond Shields
Died February 15, 1932 as a result of long-term complications suffered from a severe gas attack and wounds received while in action on July 1, 1918 in the Nieppe Forest Sector, Ypres. My great grandmother, who never remarried, lived without her beloved husband for another 57 years.

World War I was fought to "end all wars" but tragically, merely paved the way for an even worse one. Please say a prayer today for those who have fallen or who have felled others whilst in the throes of battle. For while they may have been enemies while alive, all are now comrades in death.
