Need some reference/quote advice for nonfiction

Hi all,

I'm in the process of writing a short nonfiction work and want to quote someone in the book.

How do you go about this? Do I just include a reference? Get permission?

I would think that if they actually said what you have quoted it probably won't be a problem, but don't quote me on that

I'm also a non-fiction indie author. You need to quote them with proper citation, something which grad school taught me. see this for reference.
