New to the forum have traveling question

Hi,

I have heard of people who have traveled with there Kindles through airport security who have experienced some problems with their Kindle working after it has gone the the x-ray machines. Has this happend with anyone? I will be traveling in a few months to Mexico and want to take my baby with me, but am now worried that something will happen to her if she goes through the x-ray machine. Thanks in advance to anyone who has any thoughts or experience with this.

Hi and welcome to the group! I was worried about it too as I am going to Europe in 2 weeks. We had a discussion about this the other day actually and while it has been known to happen, it is a very rare occurrence. I am comparing it to being struck by lightning. We have a lot of travelers on this board who have been through hundreds of the machines with the Kindle and have no issues.

I've taken my Kindle through security about a dozen times without problems. I usually put it in the bin with my shoes and iphone.

Lucy should be fine...I had mine off and in my bag. It went through just fine. I will say though that you're probably better off declaring it like Leslie did as they did scan my bag very slowly

There are some posts on other boards about x-ray machines turning a Kindle into a brick but I think they’re written by people who want to frighten away Kindle buyers. I’ve carried electronic equipment, computers, film and cameras all over the world, including 3rd world countries where the equipment makes the fillings in your teeth buzz, without any problem ever.

My husband travels extensively for business and always puts his through the x-ray. It's in perfect working order, never had a problem. He's had it since Spring, I bet it's gone through more than 50 times.

Two other traveling hints:

1. Take the charger with you. The USB doesn't charge the Kindle.
2. Whispernet doesn't work in Mexico, so either load up your Kindle with reading materials before you leave, or take the USB cable so you can transfer books and so on.

Thanks so much for the advice. I have not traveled with her yet. This will be a first. I will definately load up on books. My husbands not so sure this Kindle is a good thing. I buy more books now than I did before I had it. Oh Well!!

I have to keep telling my husband that Kindle books are cheaper than paper books so actually I'm saving you money. I don't thinks he's buying into my theory

Mine either but it is saving on space. I have a 7 foot tall bookshelf that is packed to the brim...and we're not even talking about the over flow! He asked me if it would stop me from buying hard copies and I told him yes unless it was something that I had to have as a physical copy

When Chris and I moved last year I had about 30-40 totes of books (and that was AFTER I gave a bunch to the local care home) and while we were hauling them in - he looked at me and said "Are you kidding me? You really NEED all these??"

LMAO...I still have a few boxes in the attic too!!! I will limit my book buying to non-fiction but I did buy Richard Paul Evans' latest book...

LOL! I'll have to try that line on my DH. I have 4 bookshelves in our office, and books are overflowing onto the floor. He always threatens to throw a few away when I'm not home, saying I'd never notice. I'd notice! It might be 10 years from now, but I'd definitely notice!
