... No. 1. The way that you're writing something with a character who's missing a facet, and you're not sure what it is, but you need it, because as it is she's like a chair with three legs. You get up from your desk, walk to the shop to buy milk and on the way back, everything falls into place and you have a fully rounded, amazing person, living in your head.
You come back, sit at your desk and write like mad.
This happened to me today.
What's another great thing about writing?

For me, at some point early on in my best writing some wierd, mystical magic happens. Somehting like JD described. My characters come alive and actually take over my story and write it for me.

In fact if they stray from my so carefully planned plans and I try to write them back into those plans my writing starts being contrived and stilted. I learned early to let my characters have their head. It's better for them - it's better for me.
