Screen copy of my books page... Nice to know the book ratings are now noticed and in view as a whole, however I am sure it will mean even more to people when they get poor reviews for no reason, I wonder if they are linked?

What I want to know is where/how do you get all those sub categories?
My book is in the "fiction" category. There aren't any sub categories listed that it fit into that I could choose.
But I see all these books with long strings of sub categories, as above. How are these figured? Anyone know?

They're not showing up on my books. Kinshield is rated #9 in kindle books ... fantasy > epic, and it's ranked #6 in the same category. Go figure!

Sometimes I have subcategories and sometimes I don't.

I think it has mainly to do with relative rank -- that is, if your book is in subcategories with a lot of competition, you have to be doing really well or the competition has to be doing really badly for you to get in that top 100 that makes the subcategory show up.

How you get IN these categories? I haven't a clue. I have to assume it's partly how you choose your own catagories, but there is clearly something else which helps -- perhaps the algorithm, perhaps the people who review your submissions and process it.

On the page where you uploaded your book to the DTP platform, you were given an opportunity to choose two categories for your books.  It is actually really important that you think about what category your book will get the most exposure and have the least competition.  So, Daughter of Time is in fiction>fantasy>historical and fiction>romance>time travel.

Sometimes Amazon will put your books into a category that seems appropriate to them (thus, my time travel series remains in 'travel' books, which I continue to find deeply amusing).  Thus, Daughter of Time's present ranking is:

Amazon Bestsellers Rank: #2,175 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
#1 in Books > Travel > Europe > Great Britain > Wales
#4 in Books > History > Europe > Wales
#9 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Fiction > Fantasy > Historical

It has a ranking in other categories too (e.g. time travel books) but these are the three top 100 listing in which it has the highest ranking. 

In the UK store it looks like this:

The system makes some strange selections at times.

I have a single short story which appears now and then in the science fiction anthology bestseller lists. Luckily, I have had no returns (my description is very clear on the length).

Strangely, my other e-book is a two-story collection, but never appears in anthology lists.

My understanding is that Amazon scan the entire book when it is uploaded, and assign the categories based on that (amongst other things).

Sometimes those crazy selections are crazy like a fox.  (And they are probably based on user data.)

So that time travel book that takes place in Wales?  People who are interested in Wales undoubtedly have a higher incidence of reading fiction about Wales.
