I would like to know if we can purchase books for our Kindle at sites other than Amazon. I think I saw some mention of Fictionwise.

If this can be done, how does one go about it?

You can buy any of the MultiFormat books at Fictionwise (except a very few that are listed as no MobiPocket format available or only secure mobipocket).  None of the books marked "MobiPocket" work, as that means Secure Mobipocket (with DRM - the serial number will need to match your PC or the very few other devices that support secure mobipocket).

Once you have your file (either a .PRC or a .MOBI file, with no DRM), then just copy it to the Kindle or the SD card using the USB cable, into the Documents folder.  Or email it to yourself (which may or may not cost you a dime - so far, people haven't been getting charged, but the TOS does say they will charge you).

For all these other sources of books, the Amazon works in the same way as a Sony (which is always why it's irritating to see the Sony touted as better due to it's use of USB instead of being tied to Sprint; the Kindle supports the same direct transfer, PLUS the use of the SD card outside of the Kindle for transfer, PLUS Whispernet for the majority who live in a coverage area).

Here's a great site if you like science fiction or fantasy. They also have a free library- look in the upper right hand corner and click on Baen Free Library.

If classics are more your cup of tea check here at MobiRead, free and uaually well formatted.

You must, on both of these sites, download books to your computer and then put them on your Kindle using the little USB cable that comes with it. An easy process. remamber that books downloaded from other than Amazon are not backed up there so keep a copy on your computer if you want a backup.

Or, once they're on your computer, you can e-mail them to your Kindle rather than using the USB cable.
