My wife and I have just upgraded from keyboard Kindles to Paperwhites. Hers shows the book she's reading as the first on the Home Screen index, mine does not. (Curiously she had this problem on the earlier model whereas I did not.)

I have mine set exactly as hers, i.e. Device, Books, and Title/Recent.

I have re-booted but not re-set. I have down-loaded but not installed OS 5.3.3, since I'd like to hear more about it before I do. (Amazon has said almost nothing of substance other than that it is "better" although it is an entirely new OS, i.e. not simply a few tweaks.)

Can anyone help me in respect of the home screen order?

Cheers, Garrett

Check and make sure that the time is set correctly on your PW.

Menu > Settings > Device Options > Device Time

And welcome to KindleBoards!

I hadn't noticed 5.3.3 but I've just downloaded and installed it.

Works OK. Nothing seems any different at all!

I know what you mean about it's a new OS, but I think actually it's still only tweaks, it's just that it comes as a full 160MB image of the whole firmware rather than a smaller image of the patches.

I think 5.3.1 was the same - ISTR it being a big download, but I've cleared out my PC from then so I can't check.

Having set the time correctly, try going into a couple of books, reading a couple of pages, then back to the home screen.

Maybe also try another restart (Home...Menu...Settings...Menu...Restart).

If that fails then I'm out of ideas!

I re-set the time - which was incorrect - but the problem persists. Other suggestions would be appreciated.

Is your wireless on? Do a sync.

Ann and Betsy are right - every time people have had this problem it's been the time on the device that was the problem. But, once you have the time set correctly, you must turn on wireless and do a sync so that Amazon and the device are all aligned.

I wouldn't have thought a restart was needed but it wouldn't hurt!

Let us know if you fix it.

On the K3, a restart seemed to kick it back into working again.

So, between the lot of us, we seem to have each remembered a couple of the important steps:

1) Check the sort order is correct
2) Check the time is correct
3) Turn on wireless to sync with Amazon
4) Restart if if still doesn't work and repeat the above.

I think that's it... if it still doesn't work after that lot then I think you might have to live with it!  ;D

Thanks, everyone

The combination did the job, but I suspect the tipping point was turning the wireless on. (I've been avoiding those annoying "special offers" from Amazon, having discovered that turning the wireless off and doing a re-start eliminated them.)

Now to install 5.3.3. I'll advise if any issues arise, although Mort's experience seems benign. (BTW, the comment that it is a complete, new OS was taken from an article I'd read earlier today before coming across this very helpful forum.

Hope I can offer some assistance in the near future.

I should have mentioned that wireless needed to be on. Mine is always on, so I forgot....sometimes the Kindle needs to communicate with the mother ship.

Glad we could collectively help!
