Well today I got up to an interesting email. Apparently someone there decided it would be a good idea to take one of my books and change it's name and the characters names and release it as there own.

So far it seems that the person in question had 12 books they have done this to from various authors. They still have several unidentified ones that may be plagiarized as well. You might want to take a look. From what I can see they turned these books into Twilight fanfics.

Their not selling them but it seems rude. The person has been reported but as of yet the books are all still up.

The only good thing is that my book had 114 reviews on it that I had never read before. I kind of wish I could move those to Amazon, but then again all the character references are to Edward and Bella and that would be confusing.

Anyways just thought I'd let everyone know. Makes me wonder how many authors there are doing this with other peoples works as well. Here's a link http://www.fanfiction.net/u/2371294/Bella5755

Most of the books have been identified, but like I said there are still some that haven't been and could be plagiarized work.

I was also notified by email today about one of my books being on the site. It looks like they took THE DOCTOR WEARS A STETSON, searched and replaced the names (not the small town, though), and put it up as Second Chances.

I've sent a report of abuse to the moderators of the site.

Sheesh!!!

Did you check out the reviews they gave your book? At least you could get something out of this. I found some of the comments on my book refreshing. (looking for the silver lining here.)

It's not just rude; it could get you in trouble with Amazon if their spiders notice this and decide that your work is "freely available" on the internet. I hope ff.net will remove these stories quickly.

I didn't even consider that.... Good point. Now that's got me worried.

Seriously. WHY would someone go to this effort? I guess you get kudos on how wonderful your stuff is...but you know it's not yours, so the accolades and reviews don't mean anything.
Maybe for the attention. They think because it's under their pen name, all the reviews really are meant for them.

People plagiarize to improve their social standing. They know it's not their work and they don't care. They just want people to think they're a big effing deal. They're trying to climb the social ladder by 'stealing status,' as it were.

Totally off-topic...

Is that a Doctor Who reference, or just coincidence?

I was notified today too. She's Just Right became This One Was Just Right. I like my title better.  =)

I was impressed by the ladies that took the time to contact us. It must have taken a lot of time today to figure out if the books were plagiarized or not and, if so, who they belonged to. From the comments section on the stolen books, you can see they do not take this lightly.

And I liked the silver lining too. I enjoyed reading how much they liked the story.  =)

I know; how nice of them to let us know. I've been in contact with one of the ladies all evening.

Regarding the silver lining . . . I was too upset to appreciate the comments praising the story. Maybe tomorrow, I'll go back and read them. Or not. Hopefully, by tomorrow, the books will be taken down.

Actually not surprised at all with plagiarism but glad that ff.net can respond to it. I've had that happen to me I think once with fanfic and, yeah, that's one thing they do work to enforce.

However, I know one big name author who started at ff.net, plagiarized, got kicked off, and is now a huge deal in publishing with a movie coming out soon.

(No, not James. I'm sure this individual is not the only one, sighs.)

That's low! I had my fanfiction plagiarized, but to have your own original novel plagiarized as fanfiction? Are those people so desparate for reviews  ???  From my experience, getting reviews on ff.net is a breeze, as long as you keep posting new chapters. Actually, I haven't posted a new story for years, and I still get reviews every month. Hope those books will be removed soon.

Hi everyone. A bunch of us on FaceBook have been sending in mass emails reports on every story, to the [email protected] email, twitter, and their blog trying to get them to remove these stolen works. We determined that 15 out of her 16 stories are all stolen. FF just doesn't seem to care. Its ridiculous that you all will probably have to threaten them with legal action before they do anything. We vehemently abhor plagarism and will continue to work on getting these removed.

This is what I've sent to FFn and posted on FB for others to use:

This author, http://www.fanfiction.net/u/2371294/Bella5755, has posted multiple plagiarized work. Please delete all plagiarized work. If possible, please ban this member for multiple copywrite violations. So far found 15 of her 16 stories are stolen.

I was really disappointed that ff.net hasn't done anything yet. This is clear plagiarism. Good luck on your work getting the author banned and the works removed. I do worry about people getting hammered and having their prices dropped to free for this.

From sad experience, if your complaint doesn't follow the format set out under 8. Copyright Policy on their TOS page to the exact letter they won't do a thing - including the link to the violating material, link to the original, address and legal statement of ownership with valid e-signature. In the past I've pretty much had to file a DMCA on them seperately for each violation.

ETA: apparently the email to contact is [email protected]
