My paperback is showing a $2.00 discount from my listed cover price. On the product page to the right is this:

Buy new:
$14.99
List Price: $16.99
Save: $2.00 (12%)

I don't remember ever seeing this type of thing before. Is an error? Do I need to contact KDP?

If they want to take a $2 cut in their portion, fine. I, however, do not want to do this.

It may be nothing. I don't know.

Thanks,

DCM

They reserve the right to offer sales, but it doesn't affect your royalty when they do. So it's a little different than ebook price matching.

It happens and they have a right to do so. They will pay your full royalty at the pre discounted price, unless they have price matched due to your book selling cheaper elsewhere.

Where I fell foul of this was in the UK. They discounted my print book from 13.99 to 2.99. Sounds great, yeah. Not really, because my ebook was 4.99 and as the ebook can't be more expensive than the print book, they priced matched to 2.99, unknown to me. I didn't sell any print books but in 2 days I sold 99 e-books. I thought I was getting 70% of 4.99 X 99 and thought there was something wrong with the royalties on my dashboard but I couldn't see my UK prices. Because the ebook was price matched to the discounted price of my print book, they only had to pay royalties at the lower price. I didn't sell any print books but they said if I had, I would have got the full royalty at the original price of the print book

It still worked out great because I hardly ever sell anything in the UK. It was the expectation of what I thought I had earned that caught me out. So not a complaint really.

What really got me was that I knew nothing about the discount on either. If I'd have known I would have marketed the hell out of the print book, but I was too late as it finished as soon as I discovered the promotion.

This was 2 to 3 months ago.

Just so you know, I`ve read many posts over the years about people praying on their knees for this exact thing to happen.
The extra visibility could sometimes launch people from obscurity to steady mortgage-paying success. Not sure if its as potent now, but I would be very encouraged that they chose you. Pretty sure it means someone there decided your book had a good shot at more sales it was promoted a bit, and they`re testing.
I think they purposely don`t tell authors its going to happen so the author can`t line up advance promotions that would queer their data.
