Question: Is it possible or practical to add color maps to a book?

Possible, sure. Practical, probably not. Lots of people read on e-ink ereaders, so they'll only see the map in black and white. And getting color pages in print books would drive up the price.

As I understand it, in order to print the maps in color, the entire interior has to be in color. That will drive the price way up.

Also, you'd have to make sure that the colors had enough contrast that they translated well to black & white. Otherwise, when viewed in black & white, they'll look muddy.

So maybe just stick with B/W, you think?

If you have a truly beautiful color map, you might consider using it as your cover. I've actually been thinking of doing this myself. Another possibility is to host the map on a website, and direct your readers to it online.
