I always just assumed there were little Amazon gnomes that sneak into your home, take inventory of your movies, games, books, etc. and then offer up stuff that you may like.  I've seen stuff come across my recommendations lists that I've been surprised to see (and ultimately have been interested in) since I never shopped for them on Amazon.

Now, I learn that it all may be partly coincidence thanks to paid advertising...  My day has been ruined.  I...don't know what to think anymore.
