I'm looking into buying a kindle, but I'm not totally sold.
lets say something happens to it. and i lose all my books. do i have to buy them all again? or are they still stored on the amazon website or my computer? and i have a mac. a lot of the ereaders are not compatible with macs. is kindle?

Molly, welcome to the board. Yes, Amazon does store all the books you have bought from them on their site. Books from other sites you would have to backup on your computer. The nice thing about the Kindle is that you do not HAVE to connect it to your computer. Although, I have not heard anyone complain about it not playing nice with a Mac.

You don't even need to own a computer to use a Kindle.

Seriously, though, you can't 'lose' your books.  Amazon keeps track of everything you buy from them.  There are also numerous free book sites.  You probably need a computer to access them, at least initially, and anything you get from there you can keep a copy.  They're generally older classics in the public domain.  AFIK mac or windows based is not an issue.  Books bought from Amazon can ONLY be read on Kindle.  Books obtained from other sites may be read on a computer with the appropriate software.  Or they can be sent to Kindle via a direct USB connection or via 'Whispernet' wirelessly.  THAT's why the sort of computer is somewhat irrelevant.  Be aware, however, that there are areas where 'Whispernet' doesn't work -- it's essentially Sprint's data network.  If you're in one of the dead zones you'll have to use a computer to transfer content to Kindle whether bought from Amazon or obtained from a free site.

Since I got my Kindle I'm mostly using it to look at the Kindle bookstore to purchase books.  I find that I like to browse online & order that way to save the battery a bit.  Using the Whispernet is free and it's Star Trek tm supercool!  It really is something to click a purchase & see it on your Kindle seconds later.  I've

I've got lots of other praises for the Kindle.  I can assure on one thing:  Once you have it you'll see what all the fuss is about

The emailed books aren't stored at amazon. Only content purchased directly from Amazon is kept in Your Media Library.

There have been many good responses to the  "lost books" issue I have a different solution of my own.  When I finish reading a book on my Kindle.  I turn it off, insert a SD card, turn it on again, then go home, menu, content manager and transfer the book to the SD card.  Then turn Kindle off and remove card again.  This way I can carry finished books with me wherever I go, and look at them whenever I want.  But I don't have to have them cluttering up my home page.  It seem like a long process but once you learn how to do it you'll love the ability to have ALL your books wherever you go.
