I've been lucky that my legal thrillers have been successful, so I'm pretty sure that the next book, due in November, will do well.

I'm thinking of throwing some money at a marketing firm to give it a good launch.

Any recommendations or thoughts?

Don't.

You're in it to sell *your* books.

THEY are in it to earn money off you.

Since books don't cost much, they will easily eat the margin before it will be profitable for you. Marketing firms are also not interested in campaigns that are much less than five figures, unless they're backyard operators, in which case keep your money and do it yourself. No one is going to care as much about your books as you do.

I'd never use them in my own business. We've used them from time to time in my day jobs over the years. 1/10th the investment in online ads will produce better results.

I second the "Don't"s. I tried once and most marketing companies have zero idea how to interact with readers. It was a money pit, though I'm glad I explored the possibility.

Independent authors know the market better than anyone. We're lucky that way.

Plus one for 'Not doing it'. If you have a fire going on well, then pour some more fuel into it. AKA Amazon/FB ads etc. That would be a multiplier to what is already working.

Or if you want to go and try new things I'd try stuff like Influencers on Instagram or book blogs (not tours, but maybe paying for banner ads on some blogger sites) etc. This way you'd also be developing relationships and meeting people and have a direct line to them, rather than 3rd party having those.

There MIGHT be benefits to trying a PR campaign to get into papers, but it is not a guarantee at all and could end up with no return.
