I have seen others do it on their websites where the author did a personal message to the fan for X amount.  But they also included an, "extra," like a bookmark or something.

And back before Covid, when authors had in-store signings, fans were required to buy the book there, and then they would get it signed for free.

Define normal. Does it ever happen? Sure. If you have a fan base, you can try it. Why not? Be warned that getting author copies is next to impossible, if not actually impossible, in some countries. Bookstores are limited like any other store these days, due to the virus.

If your series successfully finds its fans, there is a demand for signed copies.

Some authors sell them directly from their web sites. Some use them as prizes in giveaways. Others, given the state of the virus, send autographed book plates to fans in lieu of in person signing.
