How can I reduce the number of characters used to make picture links in my sig? I mean, aside from removing some of the links. 

I have only 80 characters left, but I see sigs with several more picture links than I'm currently displaying.

Any help?

You can shorten URLs using bit.ly, tinyURL or Amazon can generate pre-shortened URLs, which might get you extra characters.

If you have a lot of books, you could create a single image with multiple covers in and link it to your website.

I'll probably have to end up doing a single image, as you suggest. Maybe a small banner type thing.
