Does anyone know if the Kindle 2 is being shipped with a standard cover as the Kindle 1 was?

No it's not; you have to buy it for an extra $29.99.  They will only send a soft bag; which mean you have to take the kindle out and read bareback.

I  believe it ships with a slip cover, no case.

FYI: Yuu do not have to buy theirs! There are lots of other (and better IMO) options already and many more to come, I am sure.
