Text to speech on the 8.9?

Yesterday, I tried out the TTS feature for the first time on the 8.9 Fire HD. I had been using the 7" HD to read in bed but yesterday went from room to room with the 8.9 so I continued with that.

When I opened up the book, I was at 18% though. I turned on TTS and it read for about 20 minutes and then the screen froze and voice stopped. Then I got a message saying that it had crashed and would I like to wait or stop. Waiting didn't do anything so I'd close the app and be sent back to the Carousel. The carousel did not note any progress in the book. It was back to 18% so I searched for the spot I had left off and continued on. This situation would repeat itself multiple times over a two hour period: I would either get the Would you like to Wait or Close? message, or the app would just close and send me back to the carousel, be back at 18 percent and I'd again have to find where I was. I got to 52% of the book before calling it a night. I read for the last 30 minutes without the TTS because it was very frustrating to have this occur over and over again approximately every 15 minutes or so.

In between crashes, I verified that I have the latest software, restarted the device, was using it on a full charge and had the wireless turned on. I turned off the wireless for a time to see if that would help and it crashed with it off as well so I turned it back on.

I have every intention of submitting a bug report to Amazon, I just wondered if anyone else has experienced this type of crashing when using TTS on the 8.9. I have never had this happen on the 7" HD device.

I don't use TTS but haven't heard of this happening. I'm happy to test it on one of mine. A couple of questions, have you tried a different book and had you used TTS on this book on the HD7?

Will let you know what I find.

I have used TTS on other books on the 7 with no problem. I am going to continue with the potentially troublesome book tonight on the 7 and see if this issue happens on that device as well. I read a good portion of a different book on the 8.9 when I first got it with no problem.

Thanks for checking. I will post back after I play a few chapters on the 7 inch.

I was so busy yesterday, I only got up to about 14% before I had to shut the device down....will try it again.

No rush. Merry Christmas.

Well, last night I began the book on the 8.9 at 54%. I got to 59% and bam, the book closed, the carousel indicated I was at 54% and that was that. So I pulled out the 7 inch and searched for that page. I began reading at the 58% mark and read for nearly two hours with no crashes/closures of the program. I'd really hate to have to go through a warranty repair with this so I'm debating just using the 7 for TTS but it's going to irk me that the larger one is not working as designed. I'm going to begin a new book tonight on the 8.9 with TTS activated and see if that crashes as well.
