Millions and millions of thanks to everyone who recommended this book. I bought it last year, in paperback, but I hadn't gotten around to reading it. I read lots of posts here on Kindleboards saying how good it was, so today I picked it up and started reading it. And I read it cover to cover with hardly a break.

This is an absolutely WONDERFUL book, and I recommend it to anyone who is ready for a serious read, and who isn't afraid to shed a few tears. (I cried for about half an hour after I finished the book, and I broke down several times while I was reading.)

I am kind of glad that I bought this in paperback after all, because I will most certainly pass it on to someone else. It is definitely a book that should be shared with as many people as possible.

Thanks again for the recommendation, all! But I think I need to read something lighter now -- maybe another Pratchett or some Wodehouse!

I had purchased this book and 2 others about 1 week before I bought my Kindle.  When the O discount came up I pounced on it and returned those 3 books planning to buy them for Kindle.  I haven't repurchased them yet, but I've heard really good things about it.  I love to hear more about it.

My daughter had to read it a few summers ago as part of her summer reading list. She said it was great. We have the DTB here but I just can bear to pick it up...LOL.

I personally would love to discuss this book with other readers, because there is so much depth to it.

That said, you do have to know that the book is set in Nazi Germany during the War. And it doesn't pull any punches with regard to the Holocaust, the Nazis, or war in general. It's not graphic (which I am glad for, because I can't handle the really graphic stuff. I still haven't seen Schindler's List, and Pan's Labrynth had me fast-forwarding like crazy through the torture parts!), but it is realistic. So there's a possibility that discussions could get out of hand -- especially those "this never really happened" sorts of discussions.

So if you could find a small, like-minded group to discuss this book, then yes, I'm in!

I have posted this before, but The Book Thief was my first Kindle read. It is a beautifully written, powerful book and I felt as if I knew each character. I laughed and I cried.
