Hi Gang,

I just finished reading The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy and watching the movie. Both were wonderful, but, as usual, the book was better.

For those of you that have read the book and/or seen the movie, did you enjoy it?

sorry, no self promo in the 'Corner -- which includes blogs. But feel free to comment here directly on what you enjoyed about it. :) -- Ann

Not seen the film, but I just can't get into the book at all. Tried several times but I can't get beyond the first few pages. I'm clearly a lazy reader as I need something to grab me!
Yes and no. Not my kind of story, but Pat Conroy's writing draws me in. It's been a long time since I've read it, but I remember how his words drew a different picture and a different feeling for each character.

Conroy is a great writer even though I don't like what he writes about.

I thought they were both beautifully done.  And, as separate media related through a common story, I don't compare them, any more than I compare an orange to orange juice.  I loved 'em both.  Conroy and Streisand are both elegant craftsmen in their fields.

I enjoyed both the book and the movie, but the book much more than the movie.

The first lines in the book is one of my favorite openings to any story:
"My wound is geography. It is also my anchorage, my port of call."

Deckard
I love Pat Conroy.  I read the book and watched the movie many years ago and enjoyed both.  I really like Streisand so thought the movie well done.  If you enjoy Conroy, then you might read Beach Music....my favorite book ever.

"Elegant craftsman describes my feelings about Conroy's writing much better than I did. ;D
Beach Music is also my favorite Pat Conroy book!

Haven't read Beach Music. Gotta put it on my TBR list. Love Conroy's writing.

I also enjoyed both versions of Prince of Tides. Almost invariably, books are better than movies, but they are different media after all.

Off to check out Beach Music ...
I also love Conrad's writing. I loved Prince of Tides, but Beach Music left me cold. I thought that Streisand had cut off more than she could chew with POT, but in the end I thought she did a creditable job. I'm not a Nick Nolte fan, but I got a glimpse of his acting skills in the scene where he is in therapy with Streisand and when that painful recollection comes up from his dark corners, there is this ever-so-slight facial twitch that was pure brilliance. Having said that, the book was infinitely better.
