Like, if you wanted to write a Star Wars universe book, what would you have to do? Obviously, there are major copyright laws in place. Do you just have to be asked by the franchise to write the book? Or can you apply somewhere...?

Anyone know?
A google search brought me to this thread: http://forums.starwars.com/message.jspa?messageID=16841265

Hope it helps

Most of the people know who've done it were established pros already, and got the job through connections. Many had done less famous franchise work -- children's book series, stuff like that. Some write under their own names, some under pen names. Basically they have to know that you not only write well, but that you can write to spec and meet deadlines.

We've certainly seen such things from authors like RA Salvatore. He had at least one series out before he was asked to do a series of books for the Forgotten Realms universe. I believe that it was Del Rey. Anyways, he went on to make one of the most popular Forgotten Realms series and was asked to do the book
in which Chewbacca(sp?) died.
His son's debut as an author was in the Forgotten Realms franchise as well, but Mr. Salvatore supervised in.
