Rusty Nail - A Thriller (Jack Daniels Mysteries), by J.A. Konrath. (Still free?)

Chicago police lieutenant Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels receives disturbing videos from a serial killer, and risks everything she has to track him down. Snappy dialogue and high action pepper this J.A. Konrath thriller... free today!

"Konrath's third outing to feature Chicago police lieutenant Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels, like its predecessors, Whiskey Sour and Bloody Mary, offers violent thrills peppered with hilarious one-liners. Jack's receipt of an anonymous snuff video that looks like the work of a serial killer called the Gingerbread Man, who was recently brought to justice, marks the start of a cat-and-mouse game with the killer, who plucks victims from the periphery of Jack's world-both professional and private. Engaging characters, true guffaws and tightly knit subplots." -- Publishers Weekly

Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels of the Chicago Police Department is back, and once again she's up to her Armani in murder.

Someone is sending Jack snuff videos. The victims are people she knows, and they share a common trait -- each was involved in one of Jack's previous cases. With her stalwart partner hospitalized and unable to help, Jack follows a trail of death throughout the Midwest, on a collision course with the smartest and deadliest adversary she's ever known.

During the chase, Jack jeopardizes her career, her love life, and her closest friends. She also comes to a startling realization -- serial killers have families, and blood runs thick.

Rusty Nail features more of the laugh-out-loud humor and crazy characters that saturated Whiskey Sour and Bloody Mary, without sacrificing the nail-biting thrills. This is Jack Daniels's third, and most exciting, adventure yet.

He can push back.

End World: Dawn of the Corrupted, by David Peters. (Still 2.99?)

"New author David Peters has his own original style that I cannot compare to any other author. He humanizes his characters in a way that are very realistic but, far from boring. The story is very original and kept me engaged so I couldn't put the book down. Read it in a few days. It's thrilling from beginning to end. Without giving anything away....It really makes you think about how life would be if this happened in our world and what we would do as a society. Loved it!! AFTER MIDNIGHT, A Denver After Dark Suspense, by Kathy Clark. (Still 3.99?)

In this romantic suspense, Denver police officer Sam Morgan is on patrol when a routine stop turns into a murder that propels him into a mysterious investigation - and an unexpected alliance with a street prostitute.

"This is a very convincing book with realistic, complex characters, detailed and atmospheric settings and a plausible, powerful plot. The action is fast-paced but the author takes time to reveal the people in her novel fully. They are not cardboard cutouts that can be typical of books of this genre. For example, we see Sam's family background and how that has led him to be a cop, and we learn why it is Kate's ambition to stand on her own two feet. We understand why they have become the people they are now and they continue to develop. Clark creates a thrilling adventure that goes in directions you don't expect and which keeps you on the edge of your seat. She portrays tension and fear as well as tenderness and trust." -- Amazon reviewer

What started as a routine contact stop turned into a brutal double homicide.

Officer Sam Morgan had worked for the Denver PD for five years, most of which were spent patrolling the streets around the State Capitol. He's seen his share of druggies, dealers and hookers, but since some of them were his best sources, he normally wasn't quick to arrest them.

On a hot June Saturday night, Sam was sharing his patrol car with a ridealong, which could be a blessing or a curse. Things went smoothly until they came face-to-face with a hooker and her pimp. Sam stopped to talk to the pair, but when his backup arrived, the atmosphere changed from curious to angry and aggressive. Suddenly, the pimp pulled a gun, and after exchanged gunfire, the other police officer and the pimp were both dead and Sam was seriously wounded. The ridealong had saved the day by retrieving a dropped pistol and shooting the pimp before he can get a fatal shot at Sam. In the confusion, the prostitute disappeared into the night.

The ridealong, Brian, a reporter for The Denver Post writes a compelling first-hand account of the incident which turns out to be his big break.

Kate, the hooker, tries to convince Sam, as he recovers from his wounds that she isn't a really a prostitute, but he doesn't believe her. She tells him she's an actress, hired by the dead pimp to be on the streets that night for the filming of a TV show. As the weeks pass and it becomes clear that someone is out to either frighten her enough to leave Denver or to kill her, Sam begins to believe her story.

Joining together, the cop and the actress uncover many inconsistencies and even more suspects. Along the way, they also discover a sexual attraction that quickly turns into even more than either of them had bargained for.

As they get closer to the truth, the threat escalates until Kate finds herself fighting for her life. It's up to Sam to save her, but will he be in time'

Hooker to lover or low-life to no-life. It's all in his hands.

"With the new murders in Dark's jurisdiction, an old unsolved murder, Holly's relentless desire to help and a departmental leak, this is a book to curl up with for a good read. Mr. Grace is a wonderful writer who has the ability to capture a reader's attention and hold it. His writing pulls the reader into the story and makes you want to keep reading far into the night. "Revenge and justice burn across Texas in this gripping, grisly shootout" -- KIRKUS REVIEWS (02-10-12)

Jubal Dark has been the Sheriff of Francine County, Texas for twenty years, but Dark's enemy, Texas Ranger Buck Nevins, has convinced a Houston homicide detective to run against him. Dark's failure to solve a two-year-old rape and murder, coupled with his approaching sixtieth birthday, have led many voters to decide that Jubal should be replaced.

Four years earlier Dark had captured the wanted killer, Carl Alvin Spence, and shown him up for the back-stabbing coward he was. Spence vowed revenge. Now, two weeks before the election, Spence and two other murders have escaped from prison and are heading across Texas running for the Mexican border. On their way through Francine County they make an unsuccessful attack on the Sheriff and then brutally kill a local family and flee in their stolen car.

Holly Sharps, one of Buck Nevins' crime scene techs, shows up at the horrific murder scene but Buck tells her to go back to the office and file papers, make coffee, and pick up his dry cleaning on her way home. Holly quits and begs Sheriff Dark to let her join him in the hunt for the three escaped killers. Initially, Jubal says "no" even though he needs all the help he can get. With these fugitives on the loose, Dark no longer has any time or energy to worry about losing the election, which is now only days away. Looking down at the bodies of his murdered friends, Dark resolves to trade his star, and even his life, if that's what it will take to bring these killers to Texas Justice.
