To Hyphenate or not?

My fairly venerable copy of Webster's Collegiate has two listings. The first is bad-ass, an adjective (1956), ready to cause or get into trouble.

The second is badass, a noun (1984), a person who is considered a badass (which is about the most circular definition I've ever seen: i.e., badass = badass).

Most online dictionaries regard it as a single word, and ignore the hyphen in bad-ass.
