Tornado in Massachusetts

If you're in the Massachusetts area, turn on your emergency radio or local TV now. (5:00pm EDT as I write this)

Very unusual location for tornadoes, hope the lack of experience there does not cause needless injuries/death.

Looks like the same front is going to hit my area in NJ within an hour or so, but so far no huge storms popping up here.

Wow. Those pictures are frightening. The upside down house is surreal, but the ones that just evaporated are terrifying.

There was a lady in the house when it happened (flipped upside down). She didn't have time to get to the basement so she ran into the bathroom where she got sucked out the window. Amazingly she is fine. She was very lucky. We talked to a young kid who wasvin his kitchen when it hit. The house collapsed around him and his dog tried dragging him out. He's also uninjured. His house is the pile of rubble withbthe Tahoe truck on top.

I live in downtown Monson, MA and we took a direct hit from the tornado shown in the Brimfield video shown in the post above. Half a mile from my house there are homes missing and there's even one house that was flipped UPSIDE DOWN!! If you saw the news story of the church that had the whole top taken off, that is about one block away from my house. We were very fortunate and our home has no damage, but there is massive destruction all around us. Most of my family lives here as well and all of us are safe and our homes are in good shape. Will post a link to pictures/video later.
So glad you are safe, Laurie. That upside down house was the most amazing thing - although not in a good way. It looked like something from The Wizard of Oz. I can hardly believe the woman inside wasn't seriously injured. Someone was watching over her!

Laurie,

A few of my friends work for Turley Pub... one is the sports editor, the other a photographer. The photographer told me she was at Wal-Mart (probably in Palmer?) that night and there was a family from Monson who had lost everything. It's just so sad.

Wal-Mart is in Ware, which is a little further away but still too close for comfort. Turley Publications is on the Monson/Palmer line, just about 4 miles away from where it hit. It was definately a wild time, but overall the whole town is incredibly lucky that we had no fatalities and no serious injuries. I actually watched it from my kitchen window. The tornado was so wide across and so close that I never actually saw the funnel - I just saw a giant black wall of wind and heard the freight train noise. I remember thinking "it really does sound like a train" and "this must be a tornado, but if I say that out loud my husband will think I'm insane" - then he came running in from the porch yelling for me and my daughter to get in the basement. Even then it didn't seem real... I went in the other room to get the dog who ran away because he was scared, then I stopped and grabbed my camera because - you know, it would be kind of cool to take pictures afterwards. I grabbed my iPad, because it was on the way and I didn't want it to get ruined. I stopped and got a flashlight because I knew the power would go out. It was just so surreal that I never got scared. Meanwhile my husband was in the cellar yelling at me to get my a$# down there. By the time I got down there it was over.
