I posted thread in The Book Corner section http://www.kboards.com/index.php?topic=66951.new;topicseen#new asking about book extras. That inspired me to do something unique.

Does anyone know how to include an audio file in the book itself? If I uploaded an html file to Kindle the pics have to be separate files. Do you suppose that that would work with an audio file?

Certainly I could just include a link to the file, but if I'm not mistaken kindle owners can't access that file on their kindle.

been done. the standards are out there.
just needs the correct reader to work.

i don't think it's supported on kindle at the moment altho since there's a browser in the kindle, it might support the application of properly encoded Daisy/NISO formatted books.

see http://www.daisy.org/daisy-standard

Amazon seems to be saying they support it but I have never seen it in actions.

From the http://kindlegen.s3.amazonaws.com/AmazonKindlePublishingGuidelines.pdf

3. Embedded Audio: To embed an audio file inside a Kindle book, add a standard HTML5 tag such as the following:

"There is audio content at this location that is not currently supported for your device. The caption for this content is displayed below."

blah blah

The section starts on page 23

I could not get this pdf to open in Firefox but IE opened ok.

I've never seen this before. I had no idea that you can embed video in an ebook either. Oh my god, that would work incredibly well with 2 of my books. I had no idea that it was possible.

Now I just need to figure out HTML5. Hopefully it isn't too different from HTML.

I just spent 30 minutes talking to Kindle support. What the person told me was that if you create the book in HTML5 it will be a clickable link in the book when being viewed everywhere but the Kindle device.

However, no matter what device the reader chooses to read the book with, if the uploaded book has an audio file attached, the file will end up in the the Kindle Media Library as one of the media files that is associated with the book they just purchased. It is then up to the reader to do with it what they would like. The file could be moved to the kindle or listened to on their computer. I think this is a pretty good alternative.

My idea is to include an author reading of the prologue as a bonus feature. It seems that it's possible. What is everyone's thoughts about this idea?
