I am trying to use twitter to get the word out for free promotion. Do you find it useful?

It's all going to depend on how many followers you have, and of them how many are actual people. A lot of bots out there. It can't hurt to give it a shot, though.

Of all the social media, I find Twitter the most useful. Yes, you can use it to get the word out about a free promotion.
You can ask if some of your followers will help you, as a favour, by tweeting about the promotion, or by retweeting your tweets. Do the same for them one day.

However, be aware that most promotional tweets get ignored. There's a lot of promotional noise on Twitter, like anywhere else in the social media, and people tune it out. Posting tweets and getting retweets doesn't really help unless people read them.

Twitter works best if your followers are actively reading your tweets. For this, you need to first build a quality platform, posting interesting stuff to get your followers hooked. Once they enjoy your tweets, they'll be eager to read more by you, and then they'll jump at the chance of a free book. :)

I hope this helps. :)

It's hit-and-miss for me with Twitter. I think a well crafted tweet, used in moderation, to advertise a free or reduced price book, is the way to go. By well-crafted, I mean the hashtags need to be precise and adding an image would REALLY help too!
Thanks all for your sharing. So basically it all depends on my existing crowd, which happens to be none.  ;D Haha!

By the way, your cat is hired! ;D
I use Twitter as a resource. I found my CP there and have networked with a lot of authors. When it comes to promotions, I pretty much ignore all those posts. In fact, when I think of following someone, I check their feed first and if all I see is promo, I pass.

You'd probably be more successful using other avenues other than Twitter.

Thanks for your valuable advice. Mind if you spill a bit more? What avenues did you find useful?
I met Rayne after purchasing some of her books and then began following her on Twitter. 99% of my followers are authors that post great links to blogs etc which is very useful, also I never spam anyone, rather I congratulate them on book covers etc and I have found even people I've only just followed retweet my posts because I tend not to abuse their time.
It can be a great tool. ;D

Thanks, Michael. Great to see you. I am following you, then :p. Haha!
I have decided to follow other writers I come across on Twitter, I will even retweet their ebook announcements. I don't have many followers though.

Good to see you geronl.
I have some luck on Twitter. I rarely post about my own books, but I do tweet about cover releases and the like. The best publicity I had there was iBooks tweeting about my book. The next day's sales doubled and that's the only cause I could think of.

In general I barely use Twitter, but I think it's worthwhile to at least maintain a presence. I have better luck on Facebook in general. That said, I think you should pick a social media platform you enjoy. Authenticity is important, and there are a lot of spam bots on Twitter. People unfollow very quickly if they think you're there just to promote.

I wish I could help, but I'm probably the last person to ask as I haven't published yet. I only know that Twitter is so full of promo, you'd probably be lost in that never ending mix.

Thanks just the same, AnnaA204. You already helped me greatly by providing your thought on twitter. Thanks.

I've compiled a list of writers on Twitter who are committed to following back other writers. If you need followers, you may want to start by following these, and they'll probably follow you back as long as your profile text says that you're a writer.

Here's the URL: https://twitter.com/RayneHall/lists/writers-follow-writers/members[/url]
Oh, and you may want to follow me, too: @raynehall. Send me a tweet to say that you're a member of this board, and I'll follow you back.

Thanks Rayne for your advice. Yes, I am your follower. Cheers!
