Units sold but total sales at zero?

1988 Views 12 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  joebananas
I know Amazon Marketing Services (with Kindle Select) is fairly new, but I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this scenario. It says I have '5 units sold' but $0.00 in total sales. How is this possible? It's frustrating because if the former is true, I'll keep running the campaign, but if it's the latter, I will end it.

Any help appreciated!

They're not showing up on the graph on your dashboard? Might be a just a lag. I know I'd be looking for the "Contact Us" link right about now, though.
According to Amazon, the Sales Dashboard (bar graph with the sometimes-pretty lines) is updated shortly after a sale occurs.

Again, according to Amazon, the Month-to-date sales report is updated after the customer's payment has been processed, which may take up to 24 hours.

Now, to be honest, I've seen short periods of time where the reverse seems to be true, but overall, their explanation makes sense and matches my numbers.

If you're looking at the Sales Dashboard, and don't see any sales, then I'd make sure I had my date range correct. I've noticed that while using IE, it occasionally doesn't roll over to a new day.

Then I'd check the Month-to-date report, for all countries, and see if they show up in a day or two.

One more side note, March 2 and 3 were flaky sales reporting days. I'm not sure why, but my reports the last two days have been out of sync. I'd give it all a day or two to settle down if you can, and then make my decision.

The borrow reporting must also be messed up. I understand that sales don't show up on the month-to-date page until Amazon completes the sale and has their payment in hand. But the borrows have already been paid by virtue of the monthly fee charged. Hence, they should show up when the required 10% is read. I have borrows showing on the graph for the first and second of this month, but nothing yet on the MTD page.
Also, download the sales report. As far as I know, the sales dashboard graph does not show re-funds. So it's possible the sales money isn't showing up because the books were refunded. The sales will still register on the dashboard, but no money is given.

Though I doubt it's likely that all 5 books got refunded. So it's probably Amazon being slow... again.
Thanks everyone. I may see if there's someone I can contact.
Let us know if you get a satisfactory answer. I contacted them four times when it happened to me a few months ago. Each time I had a different person answer, and each one only reiterated how it works. And each time I wrote back telling them that I knew how it worked and to please address the question posed to them. This was on one book's first and only borrow that even was reviewed by the reader. To this day, I haven't gotten credit for it. So I'm interested to know what kind of response you get from them.

I have found that my sales go up first, and then my royalties update later in the day. It sometimes takes a decent amount of time for sales to clear. Also, when you go to MTD pages, make sure you check every single territory. The default is Amazon US, but flip through all of them. A lot of people don't know you can do that.

Mine was weird in a weird way. Five titles were reporting normal sales and one was unchanged since midnight at 0. I hadn't woken to 0 overnight sales on any book for a long time. By afternoon, it was normal sales numbers again.

Yes, let us know. You're one of the few that actually got sales through AMS.

Joyce, where are you from? I love the southwest coast and the area appears in a lot of my books, Fort Myers to Cape Sable. Mostly in the Keys, though.

Somewhere deep in the inner workings of amazon, Jeff Bezos is having a lot of fun pressing random buttons and watching us squirm. ;D :p
You've just made me think of this:

Mine often lags. I won't worry too much about it unless it doesn't show up for a couple of days.
Wayne, I live just outside of Fort Myers. In fact one of my books (So Wonderful as Want) takes place in Fort Myers in the early part of the 20th century. And, yes, I love it here, especially this time of year.

A sale will show up on the dashboard graph almost instantly but it can take up to 24 hours for the payment to come in. Also if there is a return you have to look at the sales report you can generate, they don't have an effect on the graph.

Example: If you have 2 sales but they both get refunded they will still show up on the graph but you will see no money for them.
