I recently unpublished a bunch of shorts a while back and wondered why they weren't just sinking into oblivion on the last page of my KDP bookshelf. Well, it seems even if you unpublish, if you don't uncheck that 'auto re-enroll' box for Select, you stay in the program. I didn't really think about it but assumed that I'd be out of Select when the current term ended. I mean, why would I ever want a book in Select if I unpublished it?

No big deal for me, just a slight inconvenience, but I could see that being a big issue if someone wanted to unpublish to republish under a new pen name, to put the story in a collection or maybe they've been offered a bundle of money by a trad publisher since you still are giving Amazon exclusivity on the book. You can't republish that book without leaving explicitly leaving Select. That might mean up to three more months before you're out no matter how long the book has been unpublished.
