Wondering about the difference between beta reading and developmental editing? Check out the graphic below.

P.S. I offer both! www.verityinkeditorial.com

[The purple and white graphic says, “Beta Reading vs. Developmental Editing. What’s the difference?” Under the beta reading column, it says, “I don’t understand what the main character wants in this story. She’s just kind of there, having things happen to her.” Under the developmental editing column, it says, “Your main character needs a goal, motivation to reach it (what happens if she doesn't?), and conflict (what is keeping her from reaching it). Strong characters have agency, which means they contribute to the story in a meaningful way. Here are some possible goals for her and specific chapters where you could increase her agency.”]

Tips for after NaNoWriMo or whenever you've completed a manuscript.

I'm currently booking for the new year, so shoot me a message if you'd like to chat. A sample of my portfolio, testimonials, and rates can be found at www.verityinkeditorial.com.

[The purple, silver, and white graphic says, “NaNoWriMo: Tips for After. Take at least two weeks to gain fresh perspective before diving into editing. Waiting a month or longer is even better. Read through your draft in its entirety, taking notes as you go. Review your notes and develop a plan. Start with big-picture areas such as plot, setting, and character development. Then move to specific chapters and scenes. Take your time. Major changes might need to be made, and that's okay. Seek feedback from others, such as fellow writers, beta readers, or a developmental editor.”]

I know from personal experience the most difficult part of writing can simply be getting something on the page. Remember, there is a reason why the first draft is called a rough draft. Get the bones of your story written. You can worry about the rest later.

I love this. That’s not to say you can’t write from your heart and also write to market, but if you are not passionate about what you’re writing, it will show in your work.

Many authors are too focused on telling the perfect story that they never get the story written. Concentrate on getting the words on the page. If something doesn’t work, you can always change it later. First drafts are meant to be reworked and polished until they shine.
