I found a tool tonight I really enjoyed messing with.

I was reading a book tonight, Short Story From First Draft To Final Product by Michael Milton, which had some interesting resources in, one of which was http://www.wordle.net/.

I copied and pasted in the first draft of Chapter 1 of my paranormal cozy mystery series and came up with a word cloud - the larger the word, the more often it appears. It was interesting to see which characters were the focus, and which words were used/overused the most.

I love this thread. Every author has words or phrases that are used excessively, but the author has no idea until you point it out. Here are a few examples:

started to
caused by
despite
the fact that
toward
that
of
suddenly
really
very
about

Sometimes these words or phrases are used dozens or even hundreds of times in one book. It's a wonder my delete key isn't worn out!

Just, really, and well, are my main overused filler words.

Now I'm starting to hear myself speak them. Imagine every sentence - "Well, I just really...(wanted to, like, hated, didn't want to, etc.)
I am noticing finally and really in my word cloud now - this could be a useful tool, combined with a search for the usual offenders, so that you can weed them out.
