What more do we want

I was thinking about the next version of the kindle. I love my PW, and some things are obvious - a more consistant and better screen, making it easier to quickly turn wireless on and off, a longer battery life, or more font choices and the ability to use the fonts in "bold". Some people may want audio or a memory card slot, but I don't really care about that. I can't even think of a lot of other things that I would want. It seems to me that Amazon is at least heading in the right direction of having the ultimate ereader. Any thoughts.

A much much better way to organize your books.

And bigger memory (again) would be nice.
I love the touchscreen for ease of dictionary use and the virtual keyboard. I love the light.
But I do miss my page turn buttons. Please keep the PW the way it is; just add page turn buttons.
I can't really think of anything "new" that I would add, but there are a couple of things I wish they would bring back.

1.  The SD card slot from the K1.  You didn't have to worry about how much memory was on the device and you could organize books with different cards.

2.  One-step wi-fi off/on instead of the multiple step "airplane mode" we have now.  I can't figure out why they reconfigured that at all.

3.  The easy user-replaceable battery from the K1 that were available from Amazon.

4.  I wish the reading progress bar would remain at least a user option.
I'm using my PW over my K3 because of the light and size, but I have to admit I really don't like the touch screen. Too much tapping to do things that were easily done with buttons, and too many times it does something I don't want because of an accidental touch. My ideal would be something like the K3 without the keyboard below but with the light. I want to be able to move from chapter to chapter easily as was possible with the K3, want the easier turning on and off on the wireless like the K3. In fact a K3 with light and without keyboard would be perfect. I'd give up the light and get one of the little $69 Ks except I have no wifi and need the 3G.

All fair points. . . but. . .you know if you have broadband internet in your home it's pretty easy and relatively cheap to have WiFi. You just need to buy a router.

Or get a portable hotspot like the Wal-Mart one. Cheap and easy.

True. . .but if you're already paying for Internet access wired to your house, the router would be a one time cost that would get you WiFi as long as you keep the internet.

OTOH, with a MiFi type hotspot -- which you can usually get through one of the wireless providers -- you can use it out and about as well. And they're way cheaper than a smartphone which would probably let you do the same thing. But still a charge monthly or when you use it depending on the plan you purchase -- some are 'pay as you go' I believe, which would be good.
I want a way to organize books on the Cloud. I no longer use collections much because I no longer download all my books to the device - it is too much of a pain to do this every time I get a new device. I download them all to Kindle for PC instead and use collections there. But I would rather have a way to organize the books into Collections on the Cloud, so that I can browse through them more easily from Manage Your Kindle and from Cloud View on the device.

I'd also like page turn buttons on the PW, but I have learned to live without them.

Ah, but I'm a country girl with dial-up.

I got a portable wireless device for my laptop. Worked great when I went to town. Here at home, not worth the cost. Yet my Kindle wireless works fine here. I have neighbors with satellite and they claim it works well, but the reviews are terrible. Maybe I'll try it next time I'm feeling adventurous.

The Wal-Mart one is pay-as-you-go, which is why I like it so much. I'm out and about enough that it's perfect for me. Of course, at home I use FiOS, unless the power is out. We lost power randomly for about an hour last week, and it was nice to have the MiFi to check on some things.

What I'd like to see:

1. No DRM.
2. User-replaceable battery.
3. A clock that can be set via WiFi, as in all other WiFi devices I have.
4. Control over page appearance, i.e., ability to set paragraph indents, ability to set to left justification only, more control over line and paragraph spacing.
5. Ability to sync between specified devices instead of the all-or-nothing option we have now.

TOTALLY AGREE! I want to be able to permanently delete collections via the Cloud too.
I think the PW is the best Kindle ever. I can't really think of anything more they can do to improve it. The only thing I would like to see is to be able to put collections within collections because I'd like to have author collections inside the main ones, but that's a software issue not hardware. Amazon does need to fix the lighting issues, though. For some reason mine is great, but it seems that too many other people are complaining, so they obviously need to take care of that problem.

Interesting...I used to accidentally hit buttons on the K3 keyboard all the time when I was just holding it for reading...it was an annoyance.

I dont usually have that problem with the touch screen of the PW.

I second this one. I would love to have collections within collections to separate them by author or otherwise. Other than that, I'd say the PW is pretty much perfect for me and can't think of anything else I'd need on it.

Oh wait, there is something....good pictures for the collection covers!
SD slot, sharper screen (not that it's bad right now, but it could always be better), and a latte maker.
Personally, I am very happy with my Kindle Keyboard.  When both of them (I have a back-up) die and I can no longer purchase one through a kind person on this board or eBay, I will go to the Paperwhite.  I have heard good and bad about the PW but for the most part, it seems that most people are satisfied with the device.  Device wise, I don't really require a lot.  It's great that the Kindle has Text to Speech but I almost NEVER use this.  It is great that you can download MP3s onto the Kindle to listen to music while reading but I almost NEVER use this (don't want to take up to much space needed for books).

So from a device perspective, I am good - my Kindle does exactly what I need it to do - LET ME READ!

Now if there is one area that Amazon is sorely lacking in, it is the Collections functionality. They really need to find a way to enhance this significantly.  Thank God for Calibre because this is how I currently manage my Collections and I have found for me personally, the best way to manage all of my books the way I want.  I never understood why you would make a device that could hold thousands of books, but no practical way to manage the thousands of books on the device.

I know at one point we didn't even have the Collections feature - but now that we do, Amazon needs to put forth some effort to development this aspect more.  Just my 2 cents!
