These are my ratings on Goodreads:
5 5 star
5 4 star
5 3 star

How does this come out to 4.07? This is not a complaint, it's just stumping me. I just don't understand the math. Are newer ratings given more weight than older ones?

Everything about Goodreads stumps me. I've had that average number change when the number of ratings and reviews has stayed the same. I've had the number of reviews change when no new review ever seems to show up. Just the other day a 5-star review on one book caused the average to go down. When I sort by "Newest, the newest review will often be down with those from months ago. I think their database is glitchy, but GR readers have been good to me. I ponder minor mysteries like that a while and then shrug them off.

I just released a new title. It has not sold a single copy yet. However, at Goodreads I have multiple people currently reading it, and one reader even gave it 4 stars. I appreciate the sentiment and the interest in my book listings there, but I don't for one minute believe any of the ratings/rankings/lists/etc... . The only review I know is legitimate is an author I know through social media who wrote the review.

Goodreads struggles with math. And sorting by date.

And it can days for everything to filter through their database.

You might have a new rating appear on a book and be unable to find that rating/review for nearly a week.

You might have someone make a review/rating on your book. The rating will appear in your total but not for the individual book! But it will be on their individual page.

It's best not to worry too much about it. Just enjoy.

I love Goodreads, btw, and the site has been good to me. I've just learned that it takes a while for the math to make sense and if reviews are coming in steadily the math may never make sense.

Maybe your sales haven't shown up yet? Do you have an amazon ranking?

Nope, it's been live since the 19th of Feb, and I got my 4 star rating at Goodreads for it on the 20th. No sales have shown up at any distributor, nor any rankings except at Goodreads, though. Been piling up the currently readings ever since.

I highly recommend becoming a Goodreads Librarian. I did early on, and as an author I have used that power many times, though only for good.

I currenly have –1 people reading one of my novels. Yes, negative one. Someone is actively forgetting it!

That doesn't bother me. I recommend not stressing about all the little things.

It's a huge database. There will be delays and problems. It would take a lot of money to make it perfect.

Its also very easy to accidentally shelf something on the wrong shelf. I do it all the time. So the currently reading might be to read. Or someone just has a different system in how they shelf stuff. Some use goodreads strictly as a book database to keep track of their reading stuff with no interest in sharing with anyone. Its just part of the big list below a book.

I think overthinking goodreads is the way to insanity. Not everything is rigid and like an audit.  .

I just really looked over your Goodreads page. You've got 5 ratings and you've only been live for 4 days? Even if your sales report was lagging, you should be ranked closer to 100,000 if they all had bought the book. Seems really strange. Maybe some more experienced people could take a look?
