The Ranting Raven: Editing Services (Editing)

Hi, Kboards! Depending on your needs, I have several different types of editing and proofreading services available:

Beta Reading
This is where I read and review your work as a reader, not as an editor, just like a book reviewer receiving an arc copy would. The difference is that you will know exactly what I experienced as I read your piece.

Transcription Formatting (Cleanup of Voice-to-Text Dictation)
If you’re in need of someone to insert all of those punctuation marks and paragraph breaks into your Dragon-created or Voice-to-Text manuscript, look no further. I will turn that wall of text into a proper manuscript.

Proofreading
Proofreading is like applying a finish to a piece of fine art. The point is to remove any errors that could distract the reader from appreciating your work. This is the final step you would take before publishing. I will do two passes of the manuscript.

Copy Editing
Copy editing is standard editing for, generally speaking, clean(er) copy that needs more than proofreading. It’s more in-depth than proofreading but less intensive than line or developmental editing. By clean copy in this context, I mean cleaned up from a rough or first draft. You've gone over it yourself for errors at least once.

Line Editing
Line editing is the most thorough type of editing: not only am I going to through your manuscript line by line for the usual issues, I am going to make sure each sentence works in context with the rest of the story. Depending on what’s needed, my revised copy of the text may move or remove sections of the text and rephrase whole sentences if needed to make the story flow cohesively.

Content / Developmental Editing
As a content editor, I am focused on the story: character development, genre tropes, story arc, plot structure, writing style, pacing, and objective within a book series arc. I will provide you with suggestions on how to hit the right story beats and plot points at the right time, an analysis of whether your story fits genre expectations, how you can hit genre tropes harder, and how to make your characters more endearing to the reader.

Details, payment, cancellation, and other info are both on my website and in the descriptions on my KB discussion thread.

Editorial Philosophy

Editing is an essential part of publishing, traditional or not. You’re so close to your work that you can’t possibly see all the mistakes and inconsistencies that appear in your manuscript. That’s where I come in.

Though I am thorough, I respect how much time and effort that you've put into your novel. I make changes and make suggestions that preserve your intent and your voice. I’ll find misspelled words that spell check cannot find. I also make comments that let you know my visceral reactions to the events in your novel. For example, “This is so good I forgot to edit for 10 pages” or “Burn!” or “That’s funny!”

I become a part of your team when you hire me. I work hard to make sure you understand all of my editorial choices and queries. The relationship between author and editor is sacred to me. Those feelings are reflected in my work. When you hire me, you get all of my passion, all of my time, and all of my experience.

Now Accepting Clients

Your book, your vision. It's important to you, but sometimes it's hard to bring that shining idea in your mind to life on the page. As an author myself, I know how to ask the questions that lead to the heart of the story you want to tell. As a longtime teacher, I know how to help you convey that story to readers. These are the services I offer:

Diagnostic Reading: $300, complete read with overview of strengths & weaknesses. Fee can be applied to any other editing service.

Outline & Story Consultation:
If you have an idea for a novel but don't know where to start, I can help you solidify your idea, explore your characters, and create an effective outline. Consultations by phone or (if you're within two hours of Nashville) in person.
Rates: $350

Developmental Editing:
Includes coaching to help you write your book from scratch or from a bare-bones beginning. Rates vary, depending on the extent of the work that needs to be done.

Content/Substantive Editing:
You'll receive a detailed, chapter-by-chapter report about the plot, pacing, characterization, story structure, and more. The underpinnings of the novel.
Rates: $.02/word ($20.00 per 1000 words, or $1200 for 60,000 words)

Comprehensive Editing:
Content editing as above, plus attention to language, grammar, syntax, usage errors, subject-verb agreement, and more. I'll also address awkward language, repetition, wordiness, overwriting, and other linguistic issues.
Rates: $.03/word ($30.00 per 1000 words, or $1800 for 60,000 words).

Here's what clients are saying.

"Jaden's editing comments are not only insightful and articulate, but she has an uncanny knack for divining the writer's intentions so that her advice goes right to the heart of the story. She has helped me immeasurably in fully developing my characters and plot lines." -- Philip Cioffari, independent screenwriter and award-winning author

Charm City Editing (Beta Reading, Manuscript Critique)

Discussion thread

You need to strengthen your story. I need money! Let's help each other out.

I provide:

PROOFREADING - Fixing your typos, spelling and grammar errors. $0.003 per word. Turnaround: one week.

DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING / BETA-READING - Are your characters engaging? Is your plot compelling? Is your story structured in the most effective way? I'll advise you on all these things, plus proofreading. $0.008 per word. Turnaround: 5k/ten pages a day.

SCREENPLAYS, ORIGINAL PILOTS & SPEC SCRIPTS - I'll do developmental edits on these for a flat fee of $50. Let me know which tv show you're spec-ing beforehand so I know if I'm familiar enough with it to help you.

MY BACKGROUND - I got my BFA in screenwriting from the University of Southern California, which gives me a slightly different (and ideally, valuable to you) view on how to make a story work.

THE PROCESS: Let me know the basic premise of your story (the "movie poster" sentence) and the tone. If it's romance or erotica, let me know the tags. Love to read LGBTQ stuff, as well as sf&f YA, but I'll read anything - I just want an idea of what I'm getting into before I agree.

I'll edit your story via Track Changes in OpenOffice (compatible with Word). For developmental edits, I'll comment as I go in the margins, and then leave overall feedback at the beginning of the manuscript. For screenplays, I can use the comment functions in Adobe Reader.

You'll pay 50% up front via Paypal, then the rest upon receipt of the edited manuscript.
