To make it square you need to crop it into a square, using the crop tool. Was your cover made to be a square? Or are you trying to stretch your book cover to make it fit?

The best way (if you want to use the whole cover) is to use the image layers in Photoshop and expand the background. If you don't have access to the files, talk to your cover designer.

If you just want a partial image, then crop it like Shayne suggested.

 

Usually you need to redesign the cover for an audio book, because the image must be square instead 6X9 or whatever dimensions you're using for your "book" cover. It should be 2400X2400 pixels and you can't just put color bars along the side of the original cover to "square" it. Your design actually need to be square, so you'll have to either zoom into a square on your original cover or redesign the whole thing to fit the new dimensions. Hope that wasn't confusing!

That's what I did and then tweaked the typography to fit the new size, adding the narrator's name.

What they said. You'll either have to crop it into a square or get your designer to make it square by cropping it and adjusting the text so no important elements (like the title and the character's heads) get cut out.

 

I've just noticed that ACX's cover requirements specify at least 24-bit. The cover I've made in Photoshop is 8-bit. It's 300dpi, 3000 x 3000.

Will they reject it because it's 8-bit? It's the first time I've come across bits, I have to admit...

When they say 24 bit they just mean 8 bits each for red, green, and blue. Which is the normal method for jpegs.
