Categories and Nook Press

I'm thinking of going direct with Nook Press rather than via D2D. Half my books with D2D are in the wrong, or too vague, category and any tweaking I do is for naught. I've also had a D2D rep badger Nook for what must be over a year now and still nothing.

Before I go through hoops of having to send them a physical W8-BEN (what's with that!) are there any insights with going direct and actually getting into categories where people will find your work? Having just done a dummy run it seems the category options are severely limited. Are you getting where you want to be by using keywords?

Any insights would be appreciated. I don't even know if it's worth the hassle, my sales there are never good, but then, how would peeps find my books?

Barnes and Noble doesn't use keywords. There is a keyword metadata field in the Nook Press UI that is a holdover from the old PubIt system, but it is not used and never has been used. It was originally added to support international sales through other book chains, but that never happened and apparently it wasn't worth the effort to just get rid of it from the UI. Or maybe the lone programmer they've got chained in the basement keeps hoping that one day she'll have time to get around to implementing keywords in the search engine.

If you want your book searchable by keywords, your only option is to stuff keywords into the title.

If I were to guess, I'd imagine that the other categories are for print books - much like there are differences between categories for print and Kindle books on Amazon. IIRC, I've heard people say that they were able to get their books into other categories like that by emailing Nook Press support.

Given that reliable sightings of Nook Press support are far, far, far more rare than reliable sightings of Bigfoot, I'd take that with a grain of salt the size of Chicago.
