This looks like a Bio/Memoir but sounds like a Ghost story... thus not sure what genre you're going for?

 

Historical fiction, book-ended by a ghost story.
The locations and some secondary characters are real.

 

Back cover blurb says, “Ghost towns all start out…”
Not sure why but the front cover feels like a fiction setting but the photo on the back cover feels like historical nonfiction. It looks like a real photo from the 1800s. Maybe you could use Photoshop or AI to give the back cover photo more of a ghost town feel?
Covers are really hard work. But you seem to really want to make this one right.

It's historical fiction, set in the town shown in the back photo which is now a ghost town. The front photo is the museum where the book begins, modern day.

Both title and author name (keep the author font the same across titles) need to be as large as possible. It's called branding.

No, blowing up text is not branding.

Title should be readable in a small thumbnail cover for sure. But author name, not necessarily, unless it's a known name in the industry.

Branding a different, bigger thing.

I'm in talks with a cover and interior designer, so it might work out anyway. May or may not end up using my photos from the first attempt.

 

Sounds good. My favorite covers have been where we chose the photo or artwork and the cover designer worked their magic by cropping, rearranging, and next selecting the fonts for the title, subtitle, and author name.
