Dexter--Are the books as good as the show?

I love the TV series 'Dexter.' I buy the previous season's DVD as soon as it's out and 'binge' watch it. I've been tempted to start reading the books on the same character by Jeff Lindsay, but I always opt not to, determined they won't be as good as the show. Has anybody read them? I'd be interested in thoughts comparing the two and whether the books are worth my time or not. I think the first in the series is Darkly Dreaming Dexter (Vintage Crime/Black Lizard).

Hmm, yeah, I'm not so sure I'd like that.

I LOVE the show. (I'm not sure what that really says about me, that I want a serial killer to win, but..whatever)
I have that debate with myself as well... ;)
