Kindle Countdown or Free?

First of all I am sorry for sounding like such a newbie....I am.  My first (and only, so far) book came out in January and I sold a handful of book.  I couldn't afford to do any paid advertising so it never really took off.

My second book (book two in my fantasy series)  is coming out in May.  Here is my question:

For those of you that use the Amazon countdown thingy, do you think it would be better to use this for book one in a series during the week book two comes out, or just use your free days (I can't remember if it's 3 days you get or a whole week) during that launch week of book two in the series? I was looking at the kindle count down and the lowest price you can set is .99.  Do you think it would be better to have book one for free that week of launch for book two? What do you guys think?

Thank you for your help and information.  Again, I'm sorry for being so inexperienced.

Hi Melissa,

If you only have two books out, I'd recommend putting the first book at 99-cents and, if you can, budgeting for a BookBarbarian, GenrePulse genre ad, FKTips, or Booksends ads.

If you haven't got reviews, GenrePulse will still take you (I think.) That said, if you have no reviews, it might be better to work on developing the story a bit. Critique Circle could let you swap critiques with other writers. It's okay to edit after first publish!

How many books are you planning on having in this series?

You might want to try $0.99 for the first book and promote it then do a freebie run once you have more books out. Just another strategy to consider.
I would agree with this, mostly. If you have a second book coming out with no date for a third, 0.99 for the first book is probably sensible.

If you are planning on releasing more books, though, a freebie might be a better way to build your mailing list, then use that to market the next few in the series. If you haven't started on a mailing list yet, there's a ton of advice on here and various podcasts. Long story short, it's your best way of making consistent sales. A link to sign up at the end of a widely-marketed ebook is one of the best ways of growing it organically. I find my signups from the backs of my books are more engaged than those built through newsletter-only promos (but they are not bad either).

Thank you so much guys for all your great info!!

It is going to be a 4 book series.  I'm still writing the last two but they will be out later this year.  I have 10 reviews on book one so far and since book two isn't out yet I don't have any.  :(

I'm also thinking about buying Amazon ads.  Should I just be advertising book one all the time, assuming that once they finish book one, they read the rest of the series?

I have so much to learn.  :)  Thank you again!!

Dear Friends,

I am taking the opportunity of this thread to ask a similar question. My wife's book has been out for three months now. We have done a free promotion during the first KDP Select cycle and we have also sold a good number of copies using Booksends, Bookgorilla, etc. The book has now a good number of reviews both on Amazon and Goodreads (roughly 30) and it just entered the second cycle of KDP Select.

At this point we can use a second cycle of free promotion or a countdown. In your opinion, and considering that we only have this book available for sale (it's women's fiction, you can check it here: https://www.amazon.com/Looking-Clara-Novel-Simona-Grossi-ebook/dp/B01MT8NE99), what would be the best strategy? The book is currently priced at $2.00.

  • Use the KDP Select FREE option, push the promotion using Booksends, Bookgorilla, etc., and then price the book at $0.99 for few days after the promotion ends;
  • Use the KDP Select Countdown option, price the book at $0.99, push the promotion using Booksends, Bookgorilla, etc., and then price the book back at $2.99;
  • Any other option???

Thank you very much for your help!
