How long is a piece of string? 

I have three romances planned for release this year, one thriller that is finished but I can't release yet then it's back to writing my thriller series next year.

 

Finishing my third now and I plan to write 2-3 a year going forward. So... a whole bunch!

 

At least two. After this (2nd) one, I'd like to take a breather and finish my music tutor books and then return to fiction. I'd love to make writing a career.

Well, I have itchy fingers (my writing urge) to match my itchy feet (my travel urge), and have managed to write over 40 stories so far. That's a mixture of novels, novellas and short stories. I've been writing since 2005. As for the future, I have ideas for another 25+ stories. Most of them novels. Whenever I write one, another two come along. Thankfully I can write fast enough to get through some before the list builds up to critical mass, but I think I'll be writing for a long time to come to get all of my stories written down, edited, proofed and released.

To date, I have also written two complete sci-fi romance series, and have another four ongoing series, as well as another two series in the works. I like my series. can you tell?

I usually write a book a year, so I guess I might have a good 20 -40 years left.  So maybe 20 - 40 more?

I've had 20 published since 2007. (I'd written some before) I reckon I write about three a year so if I keep going until I die..... I don't want to guess!!!!!!

 

Well, I just sold the first book of a series to a publisher, so one assumes I have another 3 books left after the one I sold. Then, I have 2 other books drafted and outlined out. Then, I have a new series that I am planning to self-publish and am working on. Oh, and I have a MG historical fantasy in need of a revision soon. Let's see...I have a few more non-fiction ideas yet.

So, yeah. at this rate, a lot. Like Dawn said, even if I write just 1 book a year, I still have another 40-50 books left in me.

 

I have my projects planned until 2013 - if a new one pops into my head, it either goes into the queue or goes ahead immediately, depending on how urgent my impulse is. I have a project a term, so four a year, but not all full length. One full length in production and one in post-production seems to work. I can't promise all of these will be accepted/published, though, but my batting average so far has been good.

I have nearly exhausted my desire to write in one genre, but not write altogether - so, a change is more likely than a full stop, as long as I feel the urge.

I'll keep writing until I just can't write no more.

a) the stories no longer pop in my head
b) NaNoWriMo ceases to exist

 

Until I die/have a stroke/alzheimer's. Writing is both a passion and an obsession. I plan to play the game to the hilt.

 

Until I die, and I can write at a rate of four books a year. Given that I'm less than 2 weeks from being 20, I should have a while to go.

To date, I've only written 2 books, but neither one will ever be published. My WIP will be though.

 

I'm currently working on the third book in the Detective Elliot series. It seems to take me longer than most -- two to three years per book. I'm not sure how many more I plan to write.

 

I currently have one novel and five non-fiction books out (mixture of solo authored and as editor) with two more novels due this year. So I'm going to go out on a limb and say loads!

 

I am about to release "The Last Page", and I have two more in the series that will be released this year. I have a"Classic Love Story" novel I'm writing with my husband with set release in October, and then a thriller with my sister in December (which will have a sequel out next year). That will be five out this year. I'm happy with pushing 4-5 out a year. Nora Roberts does it, as does James Patterson. JP writes like 7 a year? I feel like I have to get whatever story I'm working on, "out", so I can write "the next one". I'm always living in the "What if this happened and ______ "

 

@Felicity, 40 books since 2005? That's so remarkable! Do you write under multiple pen names?

 

I've written quite a few over the past 20-30 years, and have only lately been converting them into Kindle ebooks (prior to that they were stories on my web site). Six of those novels are now in the Amazon store. I've got three more to convert in order to wrap up the two different series currently available from Amazon in incomplete form (The Shadowfast Supercar Driver Logs and The Chance of a Realtime).

This conversion process is basically one last rewrite/proofing/editing session, prior to the ebook formatting.

I have another two or three series of novels which could follow up those first two-- but those are mostly still in first draft form, and so would take considerably more time to publish. Hence, I might first publish several non-fiction books I have which are much further along.

I'm unsure how many individual books there'd be in those 2-3 new series, but expect the overall total would be around six.

As old as I am, all that could easily account for the rest of my days, even if I could focus on that exclusively (which I cannot).

As long as the muses keep waking me up with crazy dreams that must be penned, I'll keep writing.

I just finished my first (see my sig), and am hoping the sales from that do well enough to at least let me go to half-time at my 8-5.

I've had my family hounding me to "finish something already" since 7th grade (late 80's). I've been writing off and on about all kinds of things, but never seemed to get down to business and actually finish any of the stories until this one.

Being as CDO (OCD but in the right order, alphabetical like it should be) as I am, I long ago created a spreadsheet to track and formalize my ideas for stories into something I could actually use. As of this writing, I have 135+ ideas for stories, including a few screenplays.

30 of those are all set in the same fantasy world; 1 6-book "master" series, with 4 additional trilogies plus a 3-trilogy set (9 books). It's going to massive, and take me nearly 8 years to write, if I do 4 a year and JUST work on that. But it'll be fantastic.

So I guess if I do 4 a year, I'll be writing for the next 35 years.

That's a good career, I think. I just can't wait to get started.

The 1 novel I've already released is the first in a planned quartet.  Next month I'm releasing the first in what'll be a series of at least 5 books, probably more.

I have other projects also in various stages of incompletion, one of which would probably spawn a series (considering I've already written a few short stories and a novelette with side characters from the novel idea).  At least 5 books that I can think of off the top of my head, not including ones that have been boxed.  (I actually use that box for my footrest.  Wonder what that says about what I think of those stories.  Hm.)

Then there are the new! shiny! ideas also rattling around up here.  And "worlds" I currently only dabble in for shorts but may end up with a novel someday.  And…

Learning to be prolific, so I can make some headway on all this.

Beyond that who knows? But these are planned out over the next 4 years or so.....between now and then I might come up with a few more ideas. Who knows?
I could get struck down by a meteor too. (And yes, I know the standard term is (whispers....B-U-S) but I figure I lesson the odds if I use the word METEOR instead of that other word....those things are much too common)

 

I have lost count of my books.  I have non-fiction books in print and many books available as Kindle/ebooks.  I have been on a kick of writing roughly two books a year and publishing two books a year...normally one non-fiction and one fiction.  I am often writing two books at the same time in addition to writing all day for a PR firm and writing articles for HULIQ, Examiner.com, Associated Content, HubPages and my blog.  This willbe the first year I published two fiction works (just published one called "Sin-Eater: Book Two -Destiny").

Writing is what I am built for and I have known that since I sat down at my mom's electric typerwriter in the 3rd grade.

So, I basically plan to write until I am unable to do so.  50 books? 100?  Who knows?  As many as I can write.  I never plan to retire.  What would I retire to do?  Write?

 

I'm releasing one more this year and a novella under a pen name. I have about ten others in various forms of drafts and outlines. I don't relaly know, guess I'll write as many as I can before I die.

 

So how many novels do you plan to write and get published?

I've been writing with publication dreams since I was a kid so I expect I'll keep it up until I die. The only remaining question is what "publication" will mean for me over the years. Right now it means publishing with small presses and self-publishing ebooks. Someday I'd love to add New York publishing to the mix but we'll see if that ever happens.

I do go through non-writing periods though, where I may take a year off and not get much done. Usually that happens when I'm pregnant.
